The 2023 Schedule

This Years Themes

Sundays: New Classics. There are five Sundays this year, but remember - I'll be away on the 22nd - so I've chosen four films that are widely considered to be among the best new horror movies of the last 15 years. Look for a haunted hand, a Ti West gem, and great performances from Ethan Hawke and Nicholas Cage!

Mondays: Best of 2022. Last year was widely considered a banner year for the genre. It was difficult to choose only five for the best of 2022, but I think Monday nights will be absolutely fantastic. Generally, these are probably the scariest movies of the 2023 HFS - but also very well done. I hope you'll take another shot of courage and join me for at least one Monday!

Tuesdays: A.I. The first four Tuesdays of the month will be devoted to suspenseful, sometimes-funny, and always thought-provoking movies about what happens when keeping it real with Artificial Intelligence goes wrong. I strongly considered having ChatGPT guest host one of these Tuesday evenings, but when I asked if it would be up for hosting, it just made up some bullshit excuse about how it couldn't get a ride to Montpelier during the week, blah blah blah.

Wednesdays: "B" Movies. The decision to devote four Wednesdays to campy, outrageous, low-budget horror comedies was an easy one. It started when I fell down a rabbit hole on Amazon Prime and discovered the 1990 masterpiece, "Frankenhooker." It went downhill from there. I can't wait for Wednesdays!

Thursdays: Real Monsters. Three Thursdays will feature furry and ferocious fiends, some high on cocaine, others not as much. 🙈😝

Fridays After the Flood: Dinner and an Outdoor Movie. For the three Fridays I will be in town, I originally planned to have a family feature followed by a scarier movie. I decided against this for a few reasons, but the most important one is this: I love the HFS because it brings us all together, but I recognize that not everyone loves any scary movies and consequently misses the chance to hang out. Soooooo, this year, I have decided on "Fridays After the Flood." On Friday the 6th, 13th, and 27th, I'd like to invite you to: (1) place an early order for an egregious amount of takeout food from any one or more of the downtown Montpelier restaurants that are back in business to help them with their financial recovery; (2) bring your takeout to my house for an early evening dinner and visit in the yard; and (3) at the appropriate hour, choose to stick around for a hand-selected, outdoor-themed scary movie, or head home before the shrieks fly. If folks are interested in coordinating food orders beforehand, etc., I think we could show a lot of love to our community restaurants!

Saturdays: Comedy of Horrors Double Feature. For the three Saturdays I am in town I have selected an "early show" and a "late show," which together will offer six of the freshest, funniest, and most entertaining horror comedies I could find. I don't think any of these movies are terribly scary and I think the laughs should more than offset the screams. If you're horror-curious, the Saturday double feature may be your night to shine.
